PYMNTS asked a range of people what Google’s AI search results would do to the web. Michael Hasse of Itwerx was one of them, and took a less gloomy line than most.
What traditional search actually optimises for
“With traditional search functionality, the first few pages of results will be dominated by companies that have perfected their SEO or paid for preferential placement.”
The consequence, as the article puts it, is that consumers settle for products that are merely “good enough”.
What AI search can do instead
AI-based search can potentially surface “the boutique product that is ‘perfect’, but had been twenty pages deep and unseen before”.
“The AI has done the hard work of delving through a far greater number of results than any human could have time or energy for to find the perfect item.”
And the dark side
“Enterprising SEO experts will use AI to generate millions of ‘products’ to fulfill every possible combination of features and functionality in hopes of capturing the AI-based market.”
Which creates a new problem: working out which products are real, in a growing sea of vaporware.
