Hardware and Software Lifecycle
The costly form of a lifecycle problem is always the emergency. A console dies on a production line. The vendor no longer exists. Parts are unobtainable. And the only quotes available are for replacing a great deal more than the thing that actually broke.
Most of this work is getting ahead of that – knowing what you have, knowing what can be extended and what genuinely has to go, and replacing it on a schedule you chose. The rest of it is what we do when nobody got ahead of it: finding the option nobody else thought to look for.
We do not resell hardware. You are not paying us a markup on equipment, and our recommendation is not shaped by what we make on it. That need not mean more work for you – we work closely with a national HP/HPE reseller who handles everything we do not, so it can be as seamless as a procurement service. You simply pay them rather than us. At the other end of the lifecycle we work with certified ITAD vendors who can provide certificates of destruction where you need them, which for anyone carrying retention or data-protection obligations is the entire point.

A manufacturer’s operator consoles were failing on a critical line. Vendor parts were scarce and expensive; full replacement cost more again. The cabling and connectors were vendor-specific – but the monitors and keyboards inside were standard components in a custom enclosure, and could simply be replaced with ordinary ones. So could most of the sensors and cameras that followed.
A firm running a thirty-year-old application on proprietary SCO Unix hardware was quoted over $100,000 to rebuild it for Windows after the hardware began failing and the original vendor disappeared. We virtualized the existing environment onto modern hardware instead. They were operational by Monday, with time to plan a real modernisation rather than be forced into one.
Undocumented systems are a lifecycle problem. Occasionally they are also something worse, and both of these came out of ordinary lifecycle work.
A mid-sized firm’s only IT manager resigned abruptly, with no documentation and no transition plan. Cataloguing what they had left took months. In one application we found a hidden timer written to stop it working after a set date – then similar timers in others, and remote access backdoors. No source code existed for some of them, so they had to be located and disabled by debugging and hex-editing the binaries.
A company in acquisition talks was being sabotaged by its own CTO, apparently to reduce the valuation. Management suspected but had no proof, and brought us in to confirm it and prepare a contingency plan. Before that plan was finished they found hard evidence another way. The CTO was escorted out, and we had under an hour to lock down access held by the person who had built much of the environment. It worked. He was picked up on camera that night, probing their wi-fi from the car park.
