Hybrid Cloud
For a decade the advice was to move everything and stop thinking about it. That advice was not wrong, but it was incomplete. Renewal quotes climb each cycle, per-seat licensing keeps growing new tiers, and the charges for moving data back out are structured to make leaving expensive. The cheapest year of a cloud platform is usually the first one.
At the same time the questions that used to be architectural have become contractual: where the data physically sits, who else can reach it, what happens during an outage or a change of policy. For anyone carrying compliance obligations, that is not a preference – it is something to be able to answer in writing.
Hybrid is not splitting the difference. It is the recognition that different workloads have genuinely different right answers, and that deciding which is which is the actual work.
Several clients have asked us about leaving Microsoft 365 – and, notably, they do not want to move to Google either. The reasons are consistent: licensing cost, data sovereignty, and a reluctance to have the whole business sitting inside a single vendor. So we built tooling to migrate Microsoft 365 tenants to NextCloud, and we are testing it internally now.
To be straight about where that stands: we have not yet done one for a client. The tooling exists and is being tested; the production experience is ahead of us, not behind us. If leaving is on your roadmap it is worth talking to us early, because on a move like this the assessment matters far more than the cutover. If you would rather be told we have years of NextCloud experience, there are providers who will.
Start With An AssessmentMicrosoft 365 and SharePoint migrations are routine work here – we have done them for virtually all of our clients. Mail, files, permissions, and the long tail of things that only surface under real use. Where Azure or Google services are already part of the estate, we support them.
Some systems will not go to a hyperscaler at any price. A firm running a thirty-year-old application on proprietary SCO Unix hardware faced a rebuild quoted at over $100,000 after the hardware started failing and the vendor no longer existed. We virtualized the environment onto modern hardware instead, and they were working again on Monday.
An international steel-supply broker ran its business from servers at headquarters, reached over VPN by everyone not in the building – fine until the business is genuinely distributed and the VPN becomes both the bottleneck and the single point of failure. We moved them to SharePoint and NetSuite. We did the bulk of that work; the NetSuite integration itself was delivered by a specialist we brought in, because we are not NetSuite experts and would rather say so now than have you find out later.
Most migration projects need weeks or months of preparation and parallel running – sometimes considerably longer. The old system stays available while the new one is proven under real use, not merely tested. The cutover is the short part, and it is short precisely because of everything that came before it.
