Vendor Management
A company of forty people can easily carry a dozen technology suppliers: an internet provider, a phone system, a line-of-business application, a hardware reseller, a cloud platform, a security product, a printer contract. Each one is reasonable in isolation. Each one has its own queue, its own support hours, and its own definition of what counts as their problem.
Failures rarely sit neatly inside one of them. When the application is slow and the ISP says the circuit is clean and the software vendor says it is the network, somebody has to hold both ends of that conversation until it resolves. We do that, because we are the only party in it who can see the whole system.
A small firm filing government documents ran its business on a thirty-year-old custom database. The original developer was gone, the hardware manufacturer was gone, the machine was failing, and there were no spare parts. They had been quoted over $100,000 to rebuild it for Windows, which they could not afford. We asked a different question – whether the system had to be rebuilt at all – and virtualized it instead. It is still running.

A manufacturer was paying vendor prices for failing operator consoles. The enclosure and connectors were specific to that vendor; the monitors and keyboards inside were ordinary off-the-shelf parts. So were most of the sensors and cameras that followed. Being locked in is sometimes a claim rather than a fact.
Support ends, companies fold, products get retired. That is a planning problem long before it is an emergency, and it usually has more options than the last surviving reseller will tell you about.
