US News asked how to stop home security cameras being hacked. Michael Hasse of Itwerx gave them an answer short on reassurance.
“Unless you pay a reputable security company … there are no easy or inexpensive solutions.”
He also warned against cameras running foreign software, which are most likely “insecure by design”.
The most effective fix is the least fashionable one
An offline camera is far more secure than an online one, and it is among the best ways to stop a camera being hacked at all. Most camera vulnerabilities come from the internet connection that lets you watch the feed remotely. A camera recording to a local video recorder is much less exposed, because the footage never leaves the building.
Why this is on a business IT site
Because the home network is not separate from your business. The same machines sitting alongside that camera are used for remote access to corporate systems, and a compromised device on a home network is a foothold with a route in.
