Techopedia asked whether SIEM platforms – often sold as the Swiss army knife of security – actually do the job. Michael Hasse of Itwerx spoke to them about what these systems really cost to run.
The cost is time and attention, not just licensing
The point put to Techopedia was about the resources an organisation has to invest to operate a SIEM at all – time as much as money.
The failures follow from that. SIEMs are commonly poorly deployed, or lack the administrative resource to be kept up to date. They are also frequently poorly integrated into the cybersecurity architecture, which produces performance deficits on top of the coverage gaps.
None of that is a criticism of the category. It is a warning against buying one as though the purchase were the control. A SIEM nobody has time to tune is an expensive way to generate alerts nobody reads – and it can leave an organisation considerably more confident than it has any right to be.
